Fall Fashion: Cricket Alexander

by SoHo Journal Staff

A native Californian, Cricket Alexander graduated from the Academy of Art College, San Francisco, with a bachelor in fine arts and fashion. As a multimedia arist, textiles are just one of the mediums she uses; however it is a favorite and always present in her work.

Learning to sew at an early age from her mother, who is a costume designer, inspired and encouraged her. Her inspirations come from everywhere and everything, most are conscious but some are not so obvious. She brings a Victorian feminine sense of detail, with liberal contrast. Then there are her favorite themes such as fetishism, forgotten classics, period costumes and humor.

Being a painter and printer, Cricket likes to incorporate her own drawings and design on her garments by silk-screening directly onto the finished piece or printing her own patterns.

Now living in New York City, she feels that her work is evolving into much simpler, wearable clothing; remaining practical, yet retaining a little edge. Her studio is located at 120 Havemeyer Street in Brooklyn.
