This summer at the sprawling Hamptons hilltop estate of John (Bunky) and Barbara Hearst was the setting for a celebration of the legendary Stella Adler and the announcement of the 2003 Stella Adler Studio of Acting Awards. John Travolta, Steven Spielberg, Ossie Davis and Ruby Dee were named to receive the prestigious awards at the “Stella by Starlight” gala November 17 at the Rainbow Room in New York. Marlon Brando is honorary chairman and one of the great teacher’s many famed students. In the stellar crowd co-hosted by Roy & Brenda Scheider were Elizabeth de Cuevas, Elizabeth Fondaras, Gail Furman, John Gruen, Bonnie Pfeifer & Charles Evans, Stan Herman, The Marshall Brickmans, Mary Skillern, Kevin Conway, Marcie Bloom, Muriel Siebert, Eli Wallach & Anne Jackson, Pia Lindstrom, Frank Langella, Dina Merrill & Ted Hartley, Mercedes Ruehl and Bob Balaban, Lynn Grossman and Joe Pintauro.

This Fall at the National Arts Club President O. Aldon James Jr., Ellen Adler and Roy Scheider hosted a reception for the “Stella By Starlight,” 2003 Stella Adler Awards committees at the Gramercy Park club. Coolcapitals, created by the Netherlands Board of Tourism and Travel & Liesure Magazine kindly sponsored this event as they will for the upcoming “Stella by Starlight” gala at the Rainbow Room in New York November 17 (For further info on this event call (212)689-4831 or email: alchmyst@msn.com). Ellen Adler (daughter of the late great actor, director and teacher Stella Adler) welcomed “Stella-r” friends to the historic townhouse, Tom Oppenheim, artistic director of the Stella Adler Studio of Acting (and Stella’s grandson) and his wife Deborah Kampmeir, also did a little celebrating for Deborah’s feature film directorial debut “VIRGIN”, a major contender in the Golden Star Fish Competition of the Hamptons Film Festival. “VIRGIN” stars Elizabeth Moss (Zoe from The West Wing), Robin Wright Penn, Daphne Rubin Vega (Rent) and Sam Riley.

Strolling through the opulent parlors were Cliff Love, Marcia Gay Harden, Sidney Lumet, Pia Landstrom, Roy & Brenda Scheider, Elaine Stritch, Chris Barrett, Zoe Caldwell, Mary Ellen Winston, Elizabeth Moss, Robin Wright Penn, Rachel Chodorov, Daphne Rubin Vega, Kevin Conway, Ted Hartley and Dina Merrill. Lewis J. Stadlen who recently starred in The Producers gave a hilarious account of his first audition for Stella – in her boudoir!! Where there are great actors, you are sure to find great writers. Among the crowd were Sammy Davis Jr. biographer Dolores Barclay, playwrights Daniel Reitz, Sean Hartley, David Hughes and Chris Wojtylko. The evening ended on a very warm familial note with Aldon James Jr. passing home baked cookies on an antique silver tray!
